A cut section that heals itself.

Sectioning the magnesium-aluminium-zinc coated plate exposes the base iron, so red rust appears in the initial stage. But as components dissolve from the surrounding coating (mainly Zn(OH)₂, ZnCl₂·4Zn(OH)₂ and Mg(OH)₂) they form a protective film that covers the cut within a few months. The film's low conductivity inhibits further corrosion of the section.
